1992Czechoslovakia agrees to split in twoFederal Assembly approves dissolution lawCzechoslovakia's Federal Assembly passed a law dissolving the country into separate Czech and Slovak states, to take effect on 1 January 1993. The peaceful division followed negotiations between Czech leader Vaclav Klaus and Slovak leader Vladimir Meciar after their parties won 1992 elections. It became known as the Velvet Divorce.
