He wrote or edited nearly 500 books across fiction and popular science. He died in New York from complications of HIV contracted through a blood transfusion.

The siege of the capital became the longest of a city in modern warfare, lasting nearly four years. The wider war brought ethnic cleansing and mass civilian casualties to the Balkans.
