1991South Africa Repeals Core Apartheid LawsPopulation Registration Act and land laws abolishedSouth Africa's parliament repealed the Population Registration Act and other foundational apartheid legislation that had classified citizens by race and restricted land ownership. The repeal followed years of negotiation between the government of F.W. de Klerk and anti-apartheid leaders. It cleared the way for negotiations toward a democratic, multiracial constitution.
