1991Boris Yeltsin Elected President of RussiaFirst popularly elected leader in Russian historyBoris Yeltsin won Russia's first direct presidential election with about 57 percent of the vote, becoming the first popularly elected head of state in Russian history. His victory strengthened his position against Soviet central authority. He went on to lead the Russian Federation after the Soviet collapse later that year.
1991Chicago Bulls Win Their First NBA ChampionshipMichael Jordan claims his first titleThe Chicago Bulls defeated the Los Angeles Lakers to win the franchise's first NBA championship, with Michael Jordan named Finals MVP. It began a run in which the Bulls would win six titles in eight years. The victory cemented Jordan's status as basketball's biggest star.
1991Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered CountryThe final film for most of the original cast. Directed by Nicholas Meyer, it uses the fall of the Klingon Empire as an allegory for the end of the Cold War.
