1990Bulgaria holds first free electionsFormer communists win under new party nameBulgaria held its first multi-party elections since 1931 on 10 and 17 June 1990. The renamed Bulgarian Socialist Party, successor to the communists, won the largest bloc of seats. Opposition parties disputed the result but the vote set Bulgaria on a path to democratic government.
