• 1925 – 1981 Bill Haley (1925-1981) Died 9 February 1981, aged 55 American musician Bill Haley, whose recording of "Rock Around the Clock" is widely regarded as one of the songs that brought rock and roll to mainstream popularity, died in Harlingen, Texas, on 9 February 1981. His band Bill Haley & His Comets had been among the first stars of the genre in the mid-1950s.
