• 1981 Attempted Coup 23-F Tejerazo A failed coup d'état by members of the Civil Guard; the King intervention secured the democracy.
• 1981 Attempted coup in Spain Civil Guard officers storm parliament Lieutenant Colonel Antonio Tejero led armed Civil Guard officers into the Spanish parliament on 23 February 1981, holding lawmakers hostage in an attempted coup. King Juan Carlos I intervened on television to denounce the coup and affirm his support for democracy. The plotters surrendered the following day.
