1893 – 1981Omar Bradley (1893-1981)Died 8 April 1981, aged 88American general Omar Bradley, who commanded US ground forces in the invasion of Normandy and later served as the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, died in New York on 8 April 1981. He was the last surviving five-star general of the US Army. He was widely known as "the soldier's general" for his reputation among enlisted troops.
