• 1980 Funeral Procession in Paris Tens of thousands mourn a public intellectual On 19 April 1980, an estimated 50,000 people joined Sartre's funeral procession through the streets of Paris to the Montparnasse Cemetery, an extraordinary public tribute rarely afforded to a philosopher. The crowd reflected the unique place Sartre had occupied in French public life as a thinker whose ideas and political interventions reached far beyond academic philosophy. He was buried at Montparnasse, where Simone de Beauvoir would later be interred beside him.
