Through works such as Being and Nothingness, Nausea, and No Exit, he explored themes of freedom, bad faith, and radical responsibility for one's own existence. A lifelong partner of Simone de Beauvoir and a prominent left-wing intellectual, he shaped postwar European thought, engaged directly in the political struggles of his era, and in 1964 became the only person ever to decline the Nobel Prize in Literature.
