• 1978 Death of Colin Cave Cave's father dies in a car accident Cave's father Colin, a teacher who had introduced him to serious literature and encouraged his creative ambitions, is killed in a car accident on 5 July 1978. Cave, then twenty years old, later describes learning of his father's death as the defining moment of his young adulthood, one that intensified both his rebelliousness and his lifelong preoccupation with mortality, guilt and religious imagery. The loss becomes a recurring undercurrent in his songwriting for decades afterward.
