• 1976 Gang of Four arrested Chinese leadership faction detained after Mao's death On 6 October 1976, less than a month after Mao Zedong's death, Chinese security forces arrested the Gang of Four, a faction of Communist Party leaders including Mao's widow Jiang Qing who had driven much of the Cultural Revolution. Their arrest marked the effective end of the Cultural Revolution and cleared the way for Deng Xiaoping's return to power. They were later tried and convicted in a widely publicised 1980 trial.
