1889 – 1976Martin Heidegger (1889-1976)Died 26 May 1976, aged 86Martin Heidegger, the German philosopher known for Being and Time and his influence on existentialism and phenomenology, died in Freiburg. His philosophical legacy remains deeply contested because of his membership in the Nazi Party and rectorship of Freiburg University in 1933. He is nonetheless regarded as one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century.

1910 – 1976Jacques Monod (1910-1976)Died 31 May 1976, aged 66Jacques Monod, the French biochemist who shared the 1965 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries in gene regulation, died in Cannes. His work with Francois Jacob established the operon model explaining how genes are switched on and off. He was also known as the author of the philosophical work Chance and Necessity.
1934 – 1976Ulrike Meinhof (1934-1976)Died 9 May 1976, aged 41Ulrike Meinhof, a founding member of the West German militant group the Red Army Faction, was found hanged in her cell at Stammheim Prison. Her death was ruled a suicide, though it was disputed by supporters who alleged foul play. She had been on trial for a series of bombings and other attacks.
