1975Wish You Were Here -- the Barrett tributeWish You Were Here (September 1975) is Pink Floyd's most personal album -- a meditation on absence, alienation and the music industry's exploitation of artists. 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' (parts I-V and VI-IX, framing the album) is a direct tribute to Syd Barrett, whose decline haunts the entire record. During the recording sessions, Barrett himself appears at Abbey Road -- grossly overweight, head shaved, eyebrows shaved -- unrecognised by his former bandmates until he speaks. Gilmour, who had been Barrett's friend since childhood, is deeply shaken. The album reaches Number 1 in both the UK and US.
