1972Direct rule imposed on Northern IrelandLondon suspends Stormont and takes direct controlIn the wake of escalating violence including Bloody Sunday, the British government prorogued the Northern Ireland Parliament at Stormont and imposed direct rule from Westminster. The move ended fifty years of devolved government in the province. Direct rule would continue, on and off, for decades.
