1971Starbucks FoundedCoffee retailer opens its first store in SeattleStarbucks opened its first store in Seattle's Pike Place Market, selling whole-bean coffee, tea and spices. Founded by Jerry Baldwin, Zev Siegl and Gordon Bowker, the company later grew under Howard Schultz into the world's largest coffeehouse chain. It became a defining symbol of American coffee culture.
