1971Salyut 1 LaunchedWorld's first space station reaches orbitThe Soviet Union launched Salyut 1, the first space station ever placed into orbit, opening a new phase of long-duration human spaceflight. Its only crew, the Soyuz 11 cosmonauts, spent 23 days aboard before dying during their return to Earth. The station later reentered the atmosphere in October 1971.
