1969AMD founded — one year after IntelAdvanced Micro Devices is founded on 1 May 1969 in Sunnyvale, California by Jerry Sanders and seven colleagues — most of them former Fairchild Semiconductor engineers, the same pool from which Intel's founders came. Sanders, a flamboyant salesman in sharp contrast to Intel's engineer-led culture, raises $1.5 million in startup funding. AMD's initial business is manufacturing AMD-branded versions of chips designed by other companies — a second-source strategy that keeps AMD alive for its first decade.
