1969IBM unbundles software — an industry is bornIBM announces on 23 June 1969 that it will 'unbundle' software — charging separately for software and services rather than including them with hardware. The decision, made partly to ward off another antitrust action, accidentally creates the independent software industry. Before unbundling, software was given away with IBM hardware; after unbundling, independent companies can charge for software on IBM machines. The decision is the origin of Microsoft, Oracle, SAP and every other enterprise software company.
