1969Ekofisk -- Norway strikes oilThe find that built the sovereign wealth fundThe Ekofisk field in the Norwegian North Sea was confirmed in December 1969 after years of unsuccessful drilling, and proved to be one of the largest offshore oil discoveries ever made. It transformed Norway from a modest economy into one of the wealthiest states in the world and funded the Government Pension Fund Global. The find came the same year as the Apollo 11 Moon landing.
