1965 – 1969Butch Vig -- the producer who made NevermindBryan David 'Butch' Vig is born on 2 August 1955 in Viroqua, Wisconsin. He studies drums and percussion at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he meets Steve Marker and Duke Erikson. Through the 1980s Vig produces records at his Smart Studios in Madison, building a reputation for bringing out the best in alternative rock bands. In 1990 Nirvana travels to Madison to record demos with Vig that impress Geffen Records enough to sign them. Vig then produces 'Nevermind' (1991) -- the album that breaks alternative rock into the mainstream and changes popular music. He and Brendan O'Brien split the production credit.
