1967Arnold Layne -- first singlePink Floyd releases 'Arnold Layne' -- a song about a man who steals women's underwear from washing lines, inspired by a real local figure in Cambridge -- as their debut single on 11 March 1967. It reaches Number 20 in the UK charts despite being banned by several radio stations for its subject matter. Barrett's whimsical, surrealist lyric writing and his distinctive guitar tone -- using a Zippo lighter as a slide -- are immediately recognisable. The single establishes Pink Floyd as the leading band of the British psychedelic underground.
