1965Ferdinand Marcos elected President of the PhilippinesStart of a two-decade ruleFerdinand Marcos won the Philippine presidential election held on 9 November 1965, defeating incumbent Diosdado Macapagal. He was inaugurated on 30 December 1965 and would go on to rule the Philippines for over two decades, including a period of martial law. His presidency remains one of the most consequential and controversial in Philippine history.
1965Great Northeast blackoutPower failure darkens New York and neighboring statesA cascading electrical failure on 9 November 1965 cut power to some 30 million people across the northeastern United States and Ontario, Canada, including all of New York City. The blackout, caused by a misconfigured protective relay, lasted up to 13 hours in some areas. It prompted a major overhaul of North American power grid reliability standards.
