1965Rhodesia's Unilateral Declaration of IndependenceWhite minority government breaks from BritainOn 11 November 1965 the white minority government of Rhodesia, led by Prime Minister Ian Smith, unilaterally declared independence from the United Kingdom rather than accept British demands for progress toward majority rule. The declaration was not recognized by any other country, and the UN imposed economic sanctions. Rhodesia remained an unrecognized state until the Lancaster House Agreement in 1979.
