1965Selma to Montgomery marchesBloody Sunday and the march for voting rightsOn 7 March 1965 Alabama state troopers attacked civil rights marchers crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, an event that became known as Bloody Sunday. A third march, led by Martin Luther King Jr. and protected by federalized National Guard troops, reached Montgomery on 25 March. The violence galvanized support for the Voting Rights Act signed later that year.
