1965Early Bird satellite launchedFirst commercial communications satellite enters serviceIntelsat I, known as Early Bird, launched on 6 April 1965 and became the first commercial communications satellite placed in geostationary orbit. It provided the first direct and near-instantaneous television, telephone, and fax links between North America and Europe. The satellite operated for over four years, well beyond its planned lifespan.
