1963Beeching Report recommends mass rail closuresBritish Railways plan cuts a third of the networkRichard Beeching's report to the British government recommended closing thousands of miles of loss-making railway lines and stations. The resulting cuts, carried out over the following years, eliminated rail service to many small towns. The report remains a byword for controversial infrastructure cuts in Britain.
