1963Sergey Bubka born in LuhanskSergey Bubka is born in Voroshilovgrad (renamed Luhansk after Ukrainian independence) in the Donbas region of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic. His father is a soldier; the family is working-class. Luhansk will later become the centre of Russian-backed separatist conflict after 2014 and under full Russian occupation after 2022 -- a grim irony for Ukraine's greatest sporting ambassador, who will spend much of his later life advocating for Ukrainian sport and sovereignty on the international stage.
