• 1956 – 1959 Military Training and Education Attended the Norwegian Military Academy and the Cavalry Officers' Candidate School, followed by studies in political science, history and economics at Balliol College, Oxford. He would maintain a lifelong connection to the Norwegian armed forces.
• 1958 – 1959 Beauty Queen and College Won the title of Miss Photogenic, Miss La Jolla and Miss San Diego as a teenager. Entered San Diego State College on a drama scholarship in 1958.
• 1959 1959: Jack Brabham Cooper Australian Brabham won the first of his three titles in the revolutionary rear-engined Cooper, famously pushing his car across the finish line at the season finale at Sebring after running out of fuel.

His father Eugene was a real estate developer and aerospace equipment distributor; his mother Gladys was a homemaker. Val grew up in the San Fernando Valley with brothers Mark and Wesley. Wesley drowned in a jacuzzi at age 15, a tragedy that profoundly affected the family and Val in particular.
