1959Antarctic Treaty signedTwelve nations set Antarctica aside for peaceful scienceTwelve nations, including the United States and the Soviet Union, signed the Antarctic Treaty in Washington, D.C., setting the continent aside for peaceful scientific cooperation and banning military activity there. It was one of the first Cold War-era arms control agreements. The treaty took effect in 1961 and remains in force.
