1956Nasser elected President of EgyptNasser wins presidential plebisciteGamal Abdel Nasser was elected president of Egypt in a national plebiscite following the adoption of a new constitution. He had effectively led the country since the 1952 revolution that overthrew the monarchy. His presidency would soon be tested by the Suez Crisis.
