• 1954 Hurricane Hazel devastates the Caribbean and Canada Deadly storm kills hundreds and floods Toronto Hurricane Hazel struck Haiti, the eastern United States, and finally Ontario, Canada, killing hundreds of people, most heavily in Haiti. In Toronto, the storm caused severe flooding that killed 81 people and reshaped the city's flood-control policies. It remains one of the deadliest hurricanes to affect Canada.
• 1954 Trieste dispute resolved Memorandum ends postwar standoff between Italy and Yugoslavia Italy, Yugoslavia, the United States, and Britain signed a memorandum returning the city of Trieste to Italian administration while Yugoslavia retained the surrounding hinterland. The agreement ended nearly a decade of tension over the territory since the end of World War II. It settled one of postwar Europe's last unresolved border disputes.
