1954Hurricane Hazel devastates the Caribbean and CanadaDeadly storm kills hundreds and floods TorontoHurricane Hazel struck Haiti, the eastern United States, and finally Ontario, Canada, killing hundreds of people, most heavily in Haiti. In Toronto, the storm caused severe flooding that killed 81 people and reshaped the city's flood-control policies. It remains one of the deadliest hurricanes to affect Canada.
1954First mass-produced transistor radio introducedRegency TR-1 brings transistor electronics to consumersRegency and Texas Instruments introduced the TR-1, the first mass-produced transistor radio, at a retail price of about 50 dollars. Its small size and reliance on transistors instead of vacuum tubes made portable radios practical for the first time. The product helped launch the consumer electronics industry built on solid-state technology.
