1954Geneva Accords signedAgreement partitions Vietnam at the 17th parallelNegotiators in Geneva ended the First Indochina War and temporarily divided Vietnam into a communist North and a non-communist South pending elections. The elections were never held, setting the stage for the Vietnam War. Laos and Cambodia were also granted independence under the accords.
