• 1953 Execution of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg Convicted atomic spies put to death Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were executed by electric chair at Sing Sing prison after being convicted of conspiracy to commit espionage for passing atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Their trial and execution were highly controversial, drawing appeals for clemency from around the world. They remain the only American civilians executed for espionage during the Cold War.
