1953Egypt Declared a RepublicMonarchy formally abolishedEgypt was officially declared a republic, ending the monarchy that had been effectively overthrown in the 1952 coup led by the Free Officers Movement. General Muhammad Naguib became the country's first president. The change cleared the path for Gamal Abdel Nasser's later rise to power.
