1952Jonas Salk begins testing polio vaccineFirst human trials of an inactivated poliovirus vaccineJonas Salk began testing his experimental polio vaccine on children at the Watson Home for Crippled Children in Pittsburgh in 1952, during the worst US polio epidemic on record. The trials followed earlier tests on Salk himself and his family. Results paved the way for the large-scale field trials of 1954.
