1952"My Funny Valentine" -- the defining recordingThe Mulligan-Baker quartet records Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart's 'My Funny Valentine' in August 1952. Baker's trumpet solo -- melodic, unhurried, vulnerable and perfectly shaped -- is one of the most celebrated instrumental performances in jazz history. The recording establishes Baker's signature style: a cool, lyrical tone with no vibrato, phrasing that sounds like speech rather than technique, and an emotional directness that bypasses sophistication to touch something more essential. Baker records 'My Funny Valentine' dozens of times over the rest of his career. None surpasses the original.
