• 1951 Treaty of Paris Establishes Coal and Steel Community France, Germany and four other states begin European integration France, West Germany, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg signed the treaty creating the European Coal and Steel Community. The pact pooled coal and steel production under a common authority to make future war between France and Germany materially impossible. It became the founding institution of what later grew into the European Union.
