1896 – 1948Antonin Artaud (1896-1948)Died 4 March 1948, aged 51Antonin Artaud, the French playwright and theorist whose concept of the "Theatre of Cruelty" reshaped twentieth-century drama, died on March 4, 1948. He spent much of his later life in psychiatric institutions, where he continued to write influential essays on theatre and art. His ideas went on to influence generations of avant-garde theatre practitioners.
