1862 – 1948Charles Evans Hughes (1862-1948)Died 27 August 1948, aged 86Charles Evans Hughes, who served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court and previously as a presidential candidate and Secretary of State, died on August 27, 1948. He led the Court through much of the New Deal era, including its early clashes with Franklin Roosevelt over reform legislation. He remains one of the few Americans to have held such a range of senior public offices.
