His films include Ninotchka, The Shop Around the Corner and To Be or Not to Be. His witty style became known as the Lubitsch touch.
1947Hollywood Ten cited for contemptHUAC hearings begin the Hollywood blacklistIn October 1947, the House Un-American Activities Committee held hearings on alleged communist influence in the film industry. Ten writers and directors refused to answer questions and were cited for contempt of Congress. On 25 November, studio heads issued the Waldorf Statement and blacklisted them.

Jewish leaders accepted the plan and Arab leaders rejected it. Civil war broke out in Palestine the next day.
