1861 – 1947Alfred North Whitehead (1861-1947)Died 30 December 1947, aged 86Alfred North Whitehead was an English mathematician and philosopher. He wrote Principia Mathematica with Bertrand Russell. He later founded process philosophy at Harvard with works such as Process and Reality.
1863 – 1947Arthur Machen (1863-1947)Died 15 December 1947, aged 84Arthur Machen was a Welsh author of supernatural and horror fiction, including The Great God Pan. His story The Bowmen gave rise to the legend of the Angels of Mons. He influenced later writers of weird fiction such as H. P. Lovecraft.

Somewhere between several hundred thousand and two million people were killed, and roughly 15 million were displaced. It was one of the largest mass migrations in history.

Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession to India on 26 October, and Indian troops were airlifted to Srinagar the next day. The war lasted until a UN-brokered ceasefire at the start of 1949.
