1946Operation Crossroads Nuclear TestsUnited States detonates atomic bombs at Bikini AtollThe US military conducted two atomic bomb tests, code-named Able and Baker, at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands to study the effects of nuclear weapons on naval vessels. The islanders had been relocated beforehand, beginning a decades-long legacy of contamination. Footage of the mushroom clouds became some of the most widely circulated images of the atomic age.
