1883 – 1945Anton Webern (1883-1945)Died 15 September 1945, aged 61Webern was an Austrian composer and a central figure of the Second Viennese School, known for his concise, atonal and twelve-tone compositions. He was accidentally shot and killed by an American soldier during the occupation of Austria after stepping outside to smoke a cigar. His work strongly influenced postwar avant-garde music.
