1945Nuremberg Trials beginAllied tribunal prosecutes surviving Nazi leadersAn International Military Tribunal opened in Nuremberg to try senior surviving Nazi officials for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and crimes against peace. It was the first trial of its kind establishing that political and military leaders could be held individually criminally responsible. Twelve defendants were later sentenced to death.
