Japan announced its intention to surrender days later. It remains the most recent use of a nuclear weapon in warfare.
• 1945 Nagasaki atomic bomb Second bomb dropped on Japan The United States dropped a plutonium bomb nicknamed "Fat Man" on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, three days after Hiroshima. Between 40,000 and 80,000 people were killed instantly.
