1940Fleeing the Nazi InvasionWhen Nazi Germany invaded Norway on 9 April 1940, three-year-old Harald, his mother and his two sisters were rushed northward, crossing into Sweden under fire. They eventually made their way to the United States, settling in Washington, DC, while his father and grandfather King Haakon VII remained in London with the government-in-exile.
1940German occupation of the Channel IslandsThe only British soil occupied by GermanyGerman forces landed on Guernsey on 30 June and on Jersey on 1 July, after Britain had demilitarised the islands. The occupation lasted until May 1945. Islanders faced deportations, forced labour and severe food shortages.
