1856 – 1940J. J. Thomson (1856-1940)Died 30 August 1940, aged 83British physicist who discovered the electron in 1897 and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906. He led the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, and seven of his assistants went on to win Nobel Prizes.
1940Second Vienna AwardGermany and Italy give Northern Transylvania to HungaryOn 30 August Germany and Italy arbitrated a territorial dispute and forced Romania to cede Northern Transylvania to Hungary. The loss sparked a political crisis in Romania. King Carol II abdicated on 6 September and Ion Antonescu took power.
