1939Marian Anderson sings at the Lincoln MemorialAn open-air concert after the DAR refuses her Constitution HallThe Daughters of the American Revolution barred the contralto Marian Anderson from Constitution Hall because she was Black. With Eleanor Roosevelt's support, she sang on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on Easter Sunday. The crowd numbered about 75,000, and the concert became a landmark of the civil rights movement.
